How does race operate among Asian Americans in the labor market? : Occupational segregation and different rewards by occupation among native-born Chinese American and Japanese American male workers

The effect of race in the U.S. labor market has long been controversial. One posits that racial effects have been diminished since the civil rights movement of the 1960s (Alba & Nee, 2003; Sakamoto, Wu, & Tzeng, 2000; Wilson, 1980). Even if some disparities in labor-market outcomes among race groups are found, advocates of this declining significance of race thesis do not attribute these disparities to racial discrimination. They, instead, understand the racial gaps as a result of class composition of racial minority groups, classes represented by larger proportions of the working-class population (Wilson, 1980, 1997) as well as unskilled-immigrant workers (Borjas, 1994)

More than human capital: Global social mobility and categorical inequality among South Koreans

Social scientists in the modernization school argue that industrialization and modernization lead societies to be "open" societies characterized by equal opportunities and a central importance of individual efforts and achievements in social mobility. They assume, using nation-states as the unit of analysis, that stratification takes place primarily and exclusively within nations. This study, by contrast, perceives stratification and social mobility as processes taking place globally. Shifting its focus from national dimensions to global and transnational dimensions, this study investigates the global social mobility of South Koreans, including Korean immigrants in the United States. This study situates income earnings and social mobility of non-migrant South Koreans and Korean immigrants in the United States within broader patterns of transnational and global social mobility, and reassesses the relative weight of categorical attributes (e.g. country) with that of human capitals (e.g. college education). The results suggest that how social stratification, despite the modernization of South Korea and the United States, remains shaped by categorical inequalities. In this sense, achievement and ascription, as criteria of selection, continue to be fundamental to global stratification. The role of achievement is far more modest than usually assumed when compared to the continuing impact of categorical attributes such as race/ethnicity and nationality

dissertationIn this dissertation, we explored the synthesis of water-soluble and photoluminescence behavior near infrared emitting (610 nm) gold nanoparticles terminated by mercaptoalkanoic acid and possessing UV range (200~350 nm) excitation. Different effects were monitored as a function of reaction condition including different gold and ligand concentrations, types of ligands, solvents and pH. It is understood that Gold-thiol complexes were formed and developed into nanoparticle-supported complexes. Analyses of the excitation spectra suggests the origin of the photoluminescence to be transitions from the triplet energy state of LMMCT with the electrons transferred from excited orbitals of Au/Au(I) sites of the gold surface. It is also the reason for the enhanced photostability compared with those produced as free molecules via other synthesis methods. The pH dependency of the emission intensity and excitation spectra alteration of the gold nanoparticles was also explored. The emission intensity of the gold nanoparticle showed linear dependency on the pH change in the weak acidic to basic region above the pH 6 with a small peak appearance at pH 4. This trend was accompanied by a distinctive excitation peak wavelength change from 280-290 nm to 250-260 nm at pH 6.. A brush configuration change of the surface ligands was proposed to explain the pH dependency. In the charged and extended form of the carboxylic acid ligands, the accessibility of water to the gold nanoparticles surface is greater than in the uncharged collapsed form. Thus, in the collapsed form, the local hydrophobicity at the gold surface is higher and theCT excitation spectrum shifts to the blue. Its biocompatibility, as suggested by the cytotoxicity test and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation test, provides broader opportunities for this product to be utilized in biological systems

A Method for Neuronal Source Identification

Multi-sensor microelectrodes for extracellular action potential recording have significantly improved the quality of in vivo recorded neuronal signals. These microelectrodes have also been instrumental in the localization of neuronal signal sources. However, existing neuron localization methods have been mostly utilized in vivo, where the true neuron location remains unknown. Therefore, these methods could not be experimentally validated. This article presents experimental validation of a method capable of estimating both the location and intensity of an electrical signal source. A four-sensor microelectrode (tetrode) immersed in a saline solution was used to record stimulus patterns at multiple intensity levels generated by a stimulating electrode. The location of the tetrode was varied with respect to the stimulator. The location and intensity of the stimulator were estimated using the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm, and the results were quantified by comparison to the true values. The localization results, with an accuracy and precision of ~ 10 microns, and ~ 11 microns respectively, imply that MUSIC can resolve individual neuronal sources. Similarly, source intensity estimations indicate that this approach can track changes in signal amplitude over time. Together, these results suggest that MUSIC can be used to characterize neuronal signal sources in vivo.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
